Silverstone wins £700k project to upgrade Hitachi Construction Machinery UK properties

Chartered building surveyors and project managers, Silverstone Building Consultancy, has won a £700k contract to upgrade and refurbish a number of industrial properties in Hebburn for Hitachi Construction Machinery UK (HCMUK).

This contract is the latest in an ongoing pipeline of development projects Silverstone has delivered for HCMUK since 2022 - bringing the construction giant’s total investment in modernising and expanding its North East facilities to£3m.

HCMUK’s 70,000 sq. ft. Unit 5 at Monkton Business Park, which is used to modify excavators for the UK and Irish construction equipment market, is set to undergo a comprehensive programme of upgrades to increase capacity, efficiency and energy performance.

The works will replace heating and cooling systems with more energy-efficient solutions and reconfigure the interior to make it more fit-for-purpose.

New fire safety and intruder alarm systems will be fitted at Unit 5 and two other properties to modernise and meet operational and compliance standards.

Silverstone, which is project manager and contract administrator, will work alongside JCP Consulting Engineers and has appointed Robertson as the main contractor following a competitive tender process.

The project has recently started on site and will take three months to complete.

Dave Roberts, CEO at HCMUK said: “These critical upgrades to our UK Headquarters will allow us to create a workspace for a large number of our valued employees that is fit-for-purpose.  Having previously worked with Silverstone on an office expansion project and the establishment of an additional machine assembly plant, it was a logical step to partner with them again on this major M&E project that will deliver class leading facilities here in Hebburn.”

Director at Silverstone Building Consultancy, Phil Bone, said: “The building works cannot affect Hitachi’s live, onsite manufacturing activity so we are carefully planning every stage to meet that expectancy. The plans have seen quite a lot of adaptation since conception which is the nature of such a fast-moving industry and we’re more than happy to be flexible and adapt to the client’s changing requirements.”

This work comes on the back of two other multi-million-pound contracts Silverstone has completed for HCMUK including building a 6,500 sq. ft. steel frame, two-storey extension at the company’s Hebburn HQ. The chartered surveying firm, which has offices in Newcastle, Leeds and London, is also involved in other infrastructure upgrading works around HCMUK’s 12-acre site.

Silverstone was also project manager and contract administrator for a comprehensive refurbishment of the warehouse which involved upgrading two storeys of office space, extensive mechanical and engineering works, roof repairs, installation of a new dock leveller, building a new yard and gatehouse facility, and enabling works for gantry cranes.
